THE REDONDO FAMILY
The Redondos' story contributes to San Diego by highlighting the city's diverse heritage, fostering community through sports, and inspiring future generations.
Project Description
Love All captures the extraordinary journey of the Redondo family, a talented Filipino-American family with nine siblings from San Diego who find tennis in 1970s Southern California through their grandmother, her station wagon, and a bag of rackets. This marks the beginning of their march towards pro tennis, exceeded only by their desire to be of service, shaping the cultural landscape of their community and beyond.
Guided by the legacy of "Mamita," their grandmother, the story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and family, illustrating how they rose above the barriers facing immigrants to achieve athletic excellence and community respect. Through intimate interviews, historical footage, and a vivid look into the unique dynamics of this family, Love All offers a deep dive into the 1970s and 1980s tennis scene with a group of nine kids who looked nothing like tennis at that time.
National Resonance of the Redondo Story
The story of the Redondo family speaks to the heart of the American immigrant experience. At a time when social barriers were high, the Redondos found tennis as a means of expression and resilience, embodying values of both determination and kindness. Their achievements, both on and off the court are an inspiration for all. The family’s legacy extends far beyond San Diego, symbolizing the tenacity and community spirit that resonate across the nation. Their story is a reminder of how Filipino immigrants contribute to the cultural and social fabric of America, setting an example of excellence that inspires people from all backgrounds.
